Group Plants in Water Zones
Careful planning will result in an attractive landscape. Check the Interactive Landscape Guide for the watering needs of the plants you've selected.

For a water-efficient landscape, it is crucial to group plants with similar watering needs into three basic zones:

Very Low WaterVery Low
Water every 7-14 days.

Low WaterLow
Water once a week.

Moderate WaterModerate
Water twice a week.

Plus special deep watering for trees:

Deep Water - Less FrequentDeep Water - Less Frequent
Water trees once every 10-14 days.

Deep Water - More FrequentDeep Water - More Frequent
Water trees once every 7-10 days.


When selecting plants, in addition to water usage, consider their light requirements. The Interactive Landscape Guide lists plant light recommendations based on how much sun is needed in one day. The Interactive Landscape Guide has broken the light requirements into three terms:

Full SunFull Sun
Greater than or equal to eight hours of unobstructed sun daily.

Part ShadePart Shade
Three to five hours of sun daily.

ShadeShade
No direct sun.
